rant: Our Brand New Taco Bell is TOO SLOW!

Ashland is funny about restaurants.
We have world class ones opening daily.
Slow-Food is a movement here.
But for fast food and kid friendly, it's another story.

We lost our McDonalds, Dairy Queen and Taco Bell in the same year.
Talk about a not kid friendly atmosphere.

But the Taco Bell was temporary. A new one was built.
Only problem is it's now the world's slowest Taco bell.
I've been several times since it reopened.

Last time I ordered at 12:41 and got my food at 1:02 pm.
1 Taco, 1 Burrito, 1 Soda...
This is unacceptable.

I went to medford taco bell and ordered in drive through.
I ordered the same thing.
Literally it was waiting for me at the window.

In ashland I waited 22 minutes the last time I did drive through.

I'm embarrassed for how mismanaged and poorly run it is.

People blog commute times, I am seriously considering blogging my taco bell wait times.

The power of the internet, behold...

Ashland Chamber of Commerce Honorary Life Member of the Year 2006

(c) Orville Hector - Ashland Daily Tidings
(c) Orville Hector - Ashland Daily Tidings

Last night I was honored and humbled by the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, by being presented (a huge surprise by the way) as Honorary Life Member of the Year 2006.
This is the most prestigious award given to a member for recognition of what they have done for the community beyond building a sustainable business.

As they read through the reasons for the award and the criteria and then they started listing the things that this person does in the community, I kept trying to guess in my mind who it was.

We live in a community where everyone does so much. Everyone I know is hyper-involved. Involved in their children, involved in their church, involved in the schools, involved in countless non-profits and involved in the community.

It made no sense to me when they read my name.

My head was spinning.
I did not know what to say.
I stood there speechless.
Humbled.
In awe.
Scrambling to find the right words.

Dena was at my side. I couldn't look at her because they knew I would start tearing up.

What do you say to a room full over 'Doers'.

I can't remember what I said and it kept me from getting a good nights sleep.

Here is what I should of said.

Thank you, this means the world to me, but I don't deserve it. Not yet.
So many other people deserve this award. It's award for a lifetime of work. I've only just begun.

I want to thank my drop dead gorgeous wife, Dena (of 14 years by the way, it's our anniversary), for forgiving my missed dinners and countless hours at the kitchen table, working on the next important project. For letting me be me. For letting me fail. For being my best friend, my partner in work and life.
I want to thank my children for forgiving me for missing so much of their lives.
I want to thank my employees for allowing me to make several of my free projects for the community a priority.
I want to thank you for inspiring me to do more. I can't begin to mention names, for fear of leaving you off, but you must know who you are. I respect your passion and your commitment to our children and our community.

There is so much I want to do, so much I need to do.
Our community has evolved in the last 100 years several times and I hope that our work will allow it to continue to evolve for the next 100.

I'm at a place in my life, where I dare dream of the next place. Where I have come to the realization that I am 43 and have only another 43 years left to give.

I better get busy.

Thank you again for this award and thank you for inspiring me.
