Seagate to get into Flash Drive Business!!!

After seeing the world erode into it's business by 7%, Seagate will finally enter the flash drive business. Check out this Blog at CNET.

This is important because they can bring interface design to Flash Technology. We can have hot swap flash, flash raid and instant flash backup.

I'm very excited. It was bound to happen.

My iPhone has 8 gigs of ram in it. WOW! and I've only used 1.4g. I have my entire contacts and calendar system on there, plus about 100 key photos of my kids and some tunes and hours and hours of video in tv shows and more.

Imagine the future. Solid State Baby! No moving parts. No crashes.

Instant on computers. Take it with you profiles.

Look at what just happened to video on the web...

Last Night, the headlines hit Adobe Extends Web Video Leadership With H.264 Support
I read this with great interest.
I am a big fan of H.264.
Apple did not include a flash player in the iPhone.
Apple convinces Google to reconvert YouTube videos to H.264 for the iPhone.
Hmmm.
Something is up.

So I read this announcement with great interest.
Then I read the blog of an Adobe Flash engineer.
WOW!

What I see is this.
Apple's Quicktime and Apple H.264 standard are becoming just that, the standard.
Adobe has done an outstanding job in converting quicktime to .FLV format streams and has really helped in the spreading of video to the web via Google/Video and YouTube (now owned by Google)

What is Apple and Google get in bed (Have you seen the iPhone?) and declare Flash dead for video.
Oops.
Flash jumps up and says "Hello, We are dumping .FLV format and going straight H.264. Whew. See we can still be the defacto standard player on the web"

Exact Quote from the blog is, " There are functional limits with the FLV structure when streaming H.264 which we could not overcome without a redesign of the file format. This is one reason we are moving away from the traditional FLV file structure."

I also love the tidbit about audio engine being 11 years old and not touched, "We are targeting multi channel playback for one of the next major revisions of the Flash Player. This requires complete redesign of the sound engine in the Flash Player which dates from circa 1996 and has not been improved since."

Apple released iWork, Keynote a few years ago and it had the ability to somewhat convert your presentation into a SWF.
What if you could get better looking animations using H.264 with interaction?
What is Apple up to?
What is Adobe up to?
How intertwined these two must be from the Mac's PDF based display and license of Adobe fonts to Adobe's fear of losing penetration and bragging rights with Flash 10.

I can't wait to see what happens.

Small

When Apple released the MacMini it was not understood, instead it was picked on for being too small. Too Little. Too Unexpandable.

I was always amazed at the marvel of all that hardware being cramed (in a technically elegant Apple way) into such a small form factor. (Nope, I still have not purchased one yet)

Today I read about a board manufacturer releasing a new motherboard that is incredibly small. A complete computer that is smaller than the hard disk and the world stands back and says, whoa! That is cool.

http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/motherboards.jsp?motherboard_id=472

Small is cool. This new board makes the MacMini look big. But wait, the formfactor of the MacMini is the size of the CD/DVD drive. It's a fixed size.

Maybe Apple needs to release the MacNano. No CD. For use in Cars, Stereo Systems, Robots.

Wait, I'm still pissed at Apple. Yes the new iMac rocks and the software (iLife '08 and iWork '08) is an incredible upgrade, but hey where is my 12" PowerBook G4 replacement?

Small is in. I need a replacement for my laptop. Come on Steve... I'm still waiting.

I just upgraded to iLife '08

Check out the cool new Web Gallery.

Make sure you check out the Mosaic and Carousel in the lower left. WOW! and click on the i icon on an image. Very Cool! Web 2.0 at its best.

I'll convert all the old ones to the new format soon.

And were back...

Since we were driving and camping in the White Mountains of Arizona we had no electricity or way to upload my pics of each day. So this post is the recap of the last few days.

We drove over 2,731 miles on this trip. We spent almost 48 hours in the car just driving. Doesn't include traffic and stops along the way for gas, meals, rest areas.

The Google Map can be found here.

The photos from the Family Reunion can be found here.

The reunion is so far away that we only go every other year. It always impresses me that over 50 years ago this family started something that lives on today. For one weekend a year they come together to camp, have fun, share faith, gossip and connect. Certain members of the family work hard to sell fireworks in Las Vegas and with that money pay for the Camp, Big Tent, Food and Porta Potties. I love getting time to meet the diverse members of the family and learn and share stories with as many of them as I can.

This year Dena and I were in charge of the Saturday Breakfast. We cooked, served and cleaned up for 300 people. We had a great family team and enjoyed the experience.

It rained late Saturday and as you can see from the pics I took, the river we camp on rose at least 6 inches. My camera was acting up so you dont get to see all the pics I took. Over 300.

On the way home we discovered Woodland, California and hope to spend more time there in the future. Teague will look into UC Davis for Vet school. I highly recommend the Holiday Inn Express in Woodland. It is AWESOME! Business Class Service and Quality at a great family rate.

We visited Dena's Dad and My brother Dennis and his family on the way to the reunion. That is always fun and makes us wish we could spend more time with them. We also spent a little time visiting with Dena's grandmother Mary in her retirement home.

We had a great crazy Teece vacation and enjoyed it all. We had to rush home to cut payroll checks for the guys. Something we will do different next time.

On the way home I asked the kids, what their favorite parts were.
1. LegoLand (Both)
2. Cattle Roping (Teague)
2. The Boat - xPloreOffshore (Quinn)
3. The Reunion (Both)

They both apologized for not making comic-con on of the top 3. It was just too overwhelming.

Funny - No one said the Drive...
